Thanks Neil, that's my opinion too.

(Would have rejoined the debate sooner, but have not had access to my email
today.)

I was a bit surprised at the emotions in some of the replies to my posting
yesterday. Well that will teach me not to try to make quick comments when I
am pressed for time! To be fair, I didn't express myself very well, so had
the choice of once bitten, twice shy, or trying again. Wonder if I'm about
to regret not taking the first option..

Many of the schools I work with are moving towards a theme based or creative
curriculum (call it what you will) at the same time trying to ensure that
there are clear, progressive learning outcomes for pupils that help to keep
standards high. One of the strategies that many schools used is what is
often known as a "skills based" approach. (Not my favourite terminology,
particularly with regard to ICT.) This means that teachers are clear about
what it is their pupils should learn to do during the year, with teachers
then planning as much of that learning as possible into their themes.

Problems can start when schools look for ICT learning outcomes to allocate
to different year groups. There are so many different suggested ICT skills
lists available on the internet, of widely varying quality, many of them
posted by ICT consultants (possibly also of widely differing quality?), who
apparently shouldn't need to look for any guidance...

This can mean that in one school a pupil is told that to make progress in
ICT s/he needs to:

.         ensure that she has used Find and Replace and Word Count;

. check that her presentation contains at least three different
transitions and some action buttons

. be able to use a search engine to find three different websites
with information about World War II.

In another school a pupil of the same age will be challenged to :

. edit his word processed text to make it more persuasive

. consider how to make his presentation more suitable to a KS1
audience, perhaps by reducing the amount of text, increasing the time texts
stays on screen or using bright colours and informative pictures

. investigate the authors of websites to inform how reliable
information on the site might be

Whilst I fully agree with those who say that pupils will find their own way
around the majority of ICT tools, there are some things that can be taught
to help pupils develop their "ICT Capability". But many primary schools
without a specialist ICT leader are struggling to identify what those things
are. That's the sort of guidance to which I was referring.

OK, time to reach for the flak jacket and summon up the courage to click
send..

Surely what they can't teach themselves though is the grammar of film,
the right way to layout a poster, the right choice of fonts, etc. We
need to raise our sights beyond just point and click skills to matters
of quality and purpose and audience otherwise we will fail our students.
