Nick
I don't think your post is negative at all - I've been thinking along =20=
similar lines myself while watching this thread.
The digital world has given us such an ability to store things we do, =20=
that the old reason why we disposed of work - no room to store it - no =20=
longer applies. So we have to think about whether to get rid of =20
things. To teachers and parents it seems such a shame for a kid's work =20=
to be disposed of; I fell over a box of my kids school work in the =20
loft the other day (they are now 25 and 28!).
But to a kid, work done even a year ago can be acutely embarrassing. =20
Am I really that bad at work or that lazy?
Reflecting on my own needs for an e-portfolio, I have huge mounds of =20
digital stuff created over the years, that I really ought to just =20
chuck. But amongst it are a few gems, and I sometimes go crazy when I =20=
can't find that really creative doc or diagram I did ages ago, that =20
would really save me time on something I am doing now. So I do have a =20=
few directories where I dump stuff that I think might be in this =20
category, and these directories are my e-portfolios.
I think your statement that users must see real benefit is absolutely =20=
spot on - just listen to people trying to push ILPs on kids and you =20
will soon realise that the kids feel they are being asked to play =20
teachers' games, they just can't see well enough why it is important, =20=
to justify the effort. Whereas kids using Fan Fiction or similar know =20=
precisely why they post things there; they do it because the feedback =20=
and applause they get feels really good.
Roger.

the real world simply doesn't work like that. Most of the early adopters =
of social networking sites (and e-portfolios are just a particular =
specialist example of this type of content) have numerous accounts on =
different applications. I think we can get too hung up on the term =
e-portfolio like with IWBs. What we are talking about is a flexible use =
of on-line information through which learning can take place and for =
which the user can create a subset of their activities to display to =
interested parties. To do that a savvy person could use generic tools =
freely available on the web now. The deficiency is not in web tools and =
technologies, its deficiency in the skills to use what is there and the =
experience to work in a different way. Its all about learning not =
administration, procurement frameworks and other bureaucratic systems. =
Until that is grasped I don't hold out much hope and there is no quick =
fix. It requires people to have the motivation to change the way they =
work. It will happen eventually, the question is to what extent it can =
be sped up? Unfortunately, a lot of the money aimed at trying to do that =
seems to be actually doing the =
reverse.

Ian
<u1:p></u1:p>
</div=
