Hi Allison,
I'd concur with Klaus, a locally hosted Moodle on an old PC is ideal for a
pilot project, and can actually scale up pretty well, or you could
subsequently move the database and files to a proper hosting solution. Ther=
e
are Moodle for Ubuntu from bare metal instructions at
http://docs.moodle.org/en/Step-by-step_Install_Guide_for_Ubuntu.
Alternatively, if your colleague isn't sensitive about where the data is
stored, Google domain apps have lots going for them, and again there's an
upgrade path to the premium edition if necessary later, see
http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/group/index.html
